The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is the second most popular route for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the southwest, this route offers a more challenging experience compared to the Marangu Route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola” route. The Machame Route is renowned for its steeper and longer treks, as well as the lack of overnight shelters along the way.
Route Overview
The Machame Route begins on Kilimanjaro’s southwest slope and typically takes about six days to complete. For optimal acclimatization and to enhance your chances of reaching the summit, we recommend a seven-day trek. This additional day allows climbers to adjust to the altitude safely.
Climbing Experience
On the Machame Route, climbers stay in tents set up at designated campsites. There are two primary paths to reach Uhuru Peak: the longer Barafu Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the Rebmann Glacier, and the more adventurous Western Breach Route, passing through Lava Tower and Arrow Glacier.
Scenic Diversity
The journey begins in lush jungle, transitions through diverse moorlands, and reaches the arid Shira Plateau. After summiting Uhuru Peak, climbers descend via the Mweka Route, which offers a unique mix of lowland forest and dry alpine desert. This route is ideal for those who enjoy a more challenging and immersive climbing experience.
